![]() |
After growing up in Michigan, majoring in chemistry at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and then graduating from medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Dr John P. Lenihan, Jr. traveled around the world with the Air Force before landing permanently in Tacoma in 1982. His interest in women's health issues led him to choose OB-GYN as a specialty. After delivering over 3000 babies, Dr. Lenihan stopped doing obstetrics in 2004. He does however continue to offer advanced treatments of normal as well as complex gynecologic problems. He was one of the first physicians in the Northwest to offer minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat a variety of gynecological disorders and was the first OB-GYN to perform robotic surgery. He now helps to train other physicians from around the country in these techniques. Dr. Lenihan's second love is teaching. As a clinical professor with the University of Washington's School of Medicine, he is actively involved with the education of medical students. He is also a frequent teacher at medical conferences, and even enjoys doing medical (and math) presentations at many of the local high schools. Finally, he is actively involved in medical research. He is an experienced investigator in new hormone therapies, contraceptives and other new and innovative gynecological therapies. He has had many publications based on his research and is often asked to speak at medical meetings about his research and the treatment of women's issues including incontinence, menopause, and minimally invasive therapies. He is Board Certified by the American Board of OB-GYN and is a member of many prestigious societies and medical organizations. Dr. Lenihan is married and lives in Tacoma, Washington. He has two grown children. |
